 On this International Giraffe Day, let's get to know our tall friends .

The Giraffe is a hoofed mammal belonging to the genus ๐‘ฎ๐’Š๐’“๐’‚๐’‡๐’‡๐’‚.It is the ๐ญ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ฅ It's chief distinguishing features are it's ๐ž๐ฑ๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ง๐  ๐ง๐ž๐œ๐ค ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐œ๐จ๐š๐ญ ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐ฌ .It belongs to the family ๐‘ฎ๐’Š๐’“๐’‚๐’‡๐’‡๐’Š๐’…๐’‚๐’†.



Full grown giraffes stand ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’ ๐ญ๐จ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ๐ญ tall, and males are taller than females.The average weight of a male giraffe is ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ๐ค๐  and the average weight of a female giraffe is ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–๐ค๐ .

Both sexes have horn like structures called ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ ,made from ossified cartilage.The ossicones are used in thermoregulation.They are also used in combat between males.Giraffes have colour vision, and have sharp senses of hearing and smell.

The giraffe has a highly elongated neck,which can reach a height of ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ๐ญ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ก.

The front legs of giraffes are longer than the hind legs.It has two types of gaits: Walking and Galloping.

A giraffe can sprint at a speed of upto    ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŽ๐ค๐ฆ/๐ก.

Giraffes usually inhabit savannahs and open woodlands.The Angolan giraffe can be found in desert environment.

Giraffes mostly browse on twigs of trees.They also feed on shrubs, fruits and grass.They eat an average of ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’๐ค๐  of plant food daily.


Giraffes usually remain in groups.There can be upto ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŽ individuals in a single group of giraffes.

The lifespan of a giraffe is upto ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ– ๐ฒ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ฌ .

In 2016,the IUCN classified the giraffe as ๐•๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž and estimated that about ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ•,๐Ÿ“๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ giraffes are left in the wild.

The primary causes for the decrease in giraffe populations are ๐ก๐š๐›๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ญ ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ and direct killing for bushmeat markets.
